In the book The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm the natural world is banished or distrusted. Some examples that show this are the world has fake bird sounds coming from a microchip instead of having real birds outside. The family has one live bird, but this bird was smuggled in. There are robots that do serving jobs for humans instead of the humans doing them themselves. For example the robots cook and serve food. Not only do they not have birds, they also have an automatic Doberman guard dog. There are many questions that people have just from the first chapter. For example, why is the dad worried that his kids are going to get kidnapped. Why are there not any live animals? Maybe these will be answered once we read further into the book.
